UPDATE on Disney’s “Bold” Avatar Experience

A LOT of exciting things are happening over on the West Coast at Disneyland Resort.

A new reimagined ToonTown just reopened. A new Tiana-themed restaurant is on the way. Tarzan’s Treehouse is becoming Adventureland Treehouse. The DisneylandForward project is moving forward. PLUS Disney CEO Bob Iger announced in February 2023 that a new Avatar project at the resort was in the works. We now have an update on that Avatar project!

According to The Orange County Register, Disneyland is working with Avatar director James Cameron to build a “bold” new Avatar experience for the resort. However, when Iger initially announced the project, it was a big surprise to just about everyone, including Disneyland resort president Ken Potrock. 

An OC Forum event was held recently where Disneyland gave a rundown of $2 billion in projects that are currently in the works at Disneyland Resort. During the event, Potrock said, “And lastly, a project that was announced by Bob Iger. By the way, a surprise to me. Not kidding. It’s great when you hear from your boss what you’re doing.”

Disneyland planners still don’t know exactly what the project will entail, but Potrock said, “Our Imagineers are working with Jim (James) Cameron and his team. We’re going to share lots more details as they become available. By the way, as I become aware of what the heck we’re going to do. But stay tuned, it’s going to be really exciting. We’re thinking bold.”

The Avatar sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water was well-received in theaters and ended up breaking a lot of box office records, so it makes sense that Disney would want to expand the franchise in the parks.

Over on the East Coast, Disney World already has a land devoted to the world of Avatar with Pandora, which the company has deemed highly successful. The land features two major attractions, as well as a gift shop and counter-service restaurant. Will Disneyland get something similar? Well, no one seems to know at this point, but we’ll be sure to share more details when Disney offers them.
